Modem is the annual inter-school computer symposium hosted by Modern School Vasant Vihar. The symposium is home to numerous multi-disciplinary competitions adhering to the theme of computer science, design and technology. The events are inclusive of programming, multi-media design, gaming and tech related quiz competitions.
I've been a part of the event every year since 2007 – handling visual identity and design, event coordination, and serving as emcee/quizmaster.
In continuation with 2012's visual identity, the brochure features tech-related icons in the background.
Brighter colours and a more fun feel were part of the central theme. 2013's brochure was designed keeping that freshness in mind.
Plus, floaty transparent objects. That adds to the tech-appeal. It does.
Refractive indices are a bonus.
This year's brochure and identity saw a drastic change from previous years in terms of coloring and style.
Metro UI and rumours of iOS 7.
With the tech-design and UI world trending towards a "fresher," more white and overall flat design, the Modem visual identity took footsteps in that direction.
You will also notice that the very Modem logo is a little different, and bolder. I did this to refresh the logo for the coming years – modern and more articulate. This increases the logo's compatibility with large and bold typefaces, as are part of the identity.
For 2011, we took a step forth in moving to retro-futurism. The brochure design features a nebula behind a very retro card-like presentation.
Instead of pure-whites, tints of pale yellow were used to incorporate the effect of ageing. Rounded edges and retro fonts contributed to the entire visual identity.
Part of Modern School's uniform is a tie that has alternating stripes of dark and light blue.
2010's brochure was designed using that striped tie as well as the school's overall identity of blue as inspiration.
Floaty translucent squares representing bits and bytes? Check.
2009. The year of Windows 7. And the UI design community's love-hate relationship with transparency. With so much drama in the tech-design scene, it would have been imprudent to not incorporate those elements in Modem's visual identity and brochure.
Thusly, combining the blue and stripes that are inherent to Modern School and transparent geometrical shapes, Modem 2009's visual identity was born.
How technical does technical get, really?
I guess we can find out by…making a blueprint.
I saw it fitting to incorporate elements of blueprinting and engineering design to the visual identity of a symposium related to advancements in computer science, engineering and technology. Plus, you know what else is blue? Modern School's overall colour scheme. A perfect fit, indeed.
